Over his career, Dr Mooney has progressively focused his practice on hip and knee surgery, the area where he has built the greatest depth of experience and the bulk of his specialist training. This focus is deliberate: the more you concentrate on one area, the better your results. Hip and knee surgery is where he operates, where he teaches, and where he has chosen to build his practice.

Hip, knee and sports surgery
Hip and knee replacement
Dr Mooney is a hip and knee replacement surgeon in Adelaide. He performs total hip replacement through the direct anterior approach, and total and partial knee replacement. Every joint replacement is planned before the day of surgery from a CT scan and delivered with the Stryker Mako robotic system, which is available at both hospitals he operates at. He completed a dedicated robotic surgery fellowship in Perth, one of the first orthopaedic surgeons in Australia to do so, and teaches the technique to other surgeons as a member of Stryker’s Mako faculty.

Knee preservation and keyhole surgery
Not every worn or injured knee needs replacing. Dr Mooney performs knee arthroscopy and meniscus repair, working to keep your own knee where that is the better option, and saying so plainly when it is not. His fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver was in arthroscopic reconstruction of the hip, knee and shoulder.

Sports injuries and ligament reconstruction
Dr Mooney reconstructs the anterior cruciate ligament and the other knee ligaments, and performs patellofemoral stabilisation, proximal hamstring tendon repair, rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation. He was elected to the South Australian Sports Medicine Association council in 2018 and served as its president from 2021 to 2023.

Dr Mooney is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and has published research in leading orthopaedic journals including the Bone & Joint Journal and the ANZ Journal of Surgery. He teaches robotic surgery technique as a member of Stryker’s MAKO faculty and served as President of the South Australian Sports Medicine Association from 2021 to 2023.

Does Dr Mooney do keyhole surgery as well as joint replacement?
Yes. Knee arthroscopy, meniscus repair and ligament reconstruction are a substantial part of the practice. Where a knee can be repaired rather than replaced, that is the option Dr Mooney will discuss with you first.
Does Dr Mooney treat sports injuries?
Yes. ACL and other knee ligament reconstruction, patellofemoral stabilisation, proximal hamstring tendon repair, rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation. He is a past president of the South Australian Sports Medicine Association.
Where does Dr Mooney consult and operate?
