Dr Mooney is committed to advancing orthopaedic surgery through research, publication, and the education of the next generation of surgeons.
Teaching medical students and orthopaedic trainees at the University of Adelaide, one of Australia’s leading medical schools.
Dr Mooney teaches other orthopaedic surgeons how to perform robotic-assisted total hip and knee replacement using the Stryker MAKO system at national instructional courses across Australia.
Dr Mooney taught as faculty on a one-day instructional course in the direct anterior approach to hip replacement, combining lectures with cadaveric surgery. He taught alongside Prof Ton Tran (Melbourne) and Dr Jono De Hoog (Townsville), with surgeons attending from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and New Zealand. The course was run by Stryker.
Dr Mooney served as an elected member of the South Australian Sports Medicine Association for six years, holding progressively senior roles including the presidency from 2021 to 2023. His involvement reflects a longstanding interest in sports-related injury and its surgical management.
